Standing before his front door, the stained veneer staring back at him, unyielding, almost mockingly so, the realisation that he had left his house keys on a nightstand in a bedroom in downtown Tokyo had just washed over him a few seconds ago, leaving him feeling dull and peacefully defeated. The shower and bed that he so longed for after an 11 hour flight might as well be in that apartment in Japan... at least she would be there...
The rain sets in. His phone is dead. Nothing left to do but brave the downpour and head over to Tom's 24 hour Internet Café. There he could at least charge up his phone. Calling a locksmith at this hour on a Sunday night would just be a waste of money, so for the next few hours, this anachronistic monument to obsolescence would be his haven. It is just a little ways down the road, but he is soaked nonetheless as he approaches the entrance.
As the tinted glass door swings open into this dingy digital refugium, the faint smell of stale cigarettes and old linoleum intermingles with the cold night air and the petrichor of the city streets. After an exhausted nod to the guy behind the counter and a short detour by the coffee machine next to the tacky aquarium, he slumps down in front of one of the terminals. By the cold light of the computer screens, he sits and feels lost in a town he calls home. He takes a sip of coffee and starts writing a love letter to a past that never was... The year is 2009.
